What is UVA’s mission? What is the Code of Ethics and why is it important? What is the organizational structure of UVA and where do you fit in? What is a PTAEO? What are the sources of revenue at UVA and how are funds processed? What do you need to know about internal controls, and what are some best practices to follow? In this class you will get answers to these questions and more, as well as have an opportunity to interact and network with other administrative professionals. This class is a required course for access to the finance applications in the Integrated System, but is also open to anyone who wants to learn about UVA’s financial operations.

To adhere to current health guidelines, this class will be adjusted from its normal format. The class will be split into 2 parts:

  • Part 1: Complete the online class, PO Shopper's Guide to Finance Fundamentals. Must be completed before attending the Zoom Session.

  • Part 2: Attend a Zoom session. You will receive more details when you register for the class in Workday Learning (see Registration Link).

This course builds on the Lean Fluency course and further explores using Lean principles and tools, with a focus on the A3, to identify and lead continuous improvement ("Lean") projects. 

The course incorporates three phases of learning:

  • Phase 1 - pre-workshop activities 
  • Phase 2 - 3-hour facilitated class
  • Phase 3 - post-workshop project coaching session

Approximately one week prior to the workshop, you will receive the Phase 1 learning activities. Please bring your completed activities to the class. 

Registration will close approximately one week before the class date to allow time to complete the Phase 1 learning activities.

In order to maintain strong Internal Control standards, it is important to reconcile your revenue accounts as well as your expenditure accounts.  This course is designed to help employees navigate the General Ledger (GL) revenue reconciliation process at the University of Virginia using University Business Intelligence (UBI).   In this course, we discuss how to comply with policy and procedure to accurately complete your monthly revenue reconciliations.  This course will be most useful for UVA Staff and Faculty who prepare, review, and approve revenue reconciliations.

All departments spend money, whether it is office supplies, equipment, or personnel.  It is important that we reconcile these purchases each month to maintain strong Internal Control standards.  This course is designed to help employees navigate the expenditure reconciliation process at the University of Virginia using Recon@ UVA.   In this course, we discuss how to comply with policy and procedure to accurately complete your monthly expenditure reconciliations for transactions that occur in the Grants Management (GM) module.  This course will be most useful for UVA Staff and Faculty who prepare, review, and approve expenditure reconciliations.

Lean Labs is a deeper dive into individual lean topics to enhance your continuous improvement skill set. Lean Labs consists of four lessons, Data Collection, Change Management, Gemba/Kaizen, and Root Cause Analysis. The lessons will be completed in a two day workshop. You must have completed Lean Fluency and Lean Projects to participate in this course.

This course provides an overview of Lean concepts and terminology.  Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to describe the basics of Lean principles, vocabulary, and tools.

The course incorporates three phases of learning:

  • Phase 1 - pre-workshop activities including watching 5 brief videos, creating a process map, and completing a learning guide.
  • Phase 2 - 3-hour facilitated class.
  • Phase 3 - post-workshop activities to reinforce concepts discussed in the class (should take about 1-2 hours to complete).

     

Approximately one week prior to the workshop, you will receive the Phase 1 learning activities. Please bring your completed activities to the class. They should take about 45-60 minutes to complete.

Registration will close approximately one week before the class date to allow time to complete the Phase 1 learning activities.

Based on Lean concepts, this class provides practical, easy-to-implement strategies to make your current processes more efficient. Upon completion of the class, you will gain skills to help you:

  • Use the 5S strategy for organization to help with identifying and eliminating waste and continuously improving processes.
  • Document how you do your work using the Standard Work approach.
  • Manage work through tools such as a Kanban Board.
  • Implement time saving ideas to improve efficiency and increase productivity.
